The Envoy

Have you ever found yourself in a cup where the tea storm is boiling hot? What are the chances that you would choose to be the peace in that stormy situation?

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Matthew 5:9 (KJV)

I recently boarded an empty bus on my way to work which picked up passengers on the way and the journey was smooth.

As the journey continued, the driver parked the vehicle all of a sudden and mentioned that he had to settle a fight between two younger colleagues just by the road. In a split second, he was already out of the bus. I was confused, wondering what was happening and why I had to be part of a drama I knew nothing about (at the same time running late for work).

See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 (KJV)

For a couple of minutes, the fight was on and a crowd already gathered but the driver was right in the middle of it. It was obvious that he did his best to hear both parties out and calm them down. Soon, the fighters were already laughing and hugging each other. Indeed, a pleasant happy ending it was to have witnessed.

The moment the driver returned to the wheel, a lady picked up a conversation with him that eventually caused an argument. She questioned his action of going to settle fight at the expanse of losing his passengers and time. True to her point, some passengers already alighted because they were in a hurry.

Then, the driver stood on his point explaining how that he couldn’t have seen that sort of violent fight and turned his face away. “What if they stab themselves with a knife or bottle and somebody dies in the process?”, he asked.

Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

Philippians 4:9 (KJV)

I tried to reason about it and I was reminded about the truth that every believer has been called to be an envoy of peace in this world. Just as the scripture above speaks about following the footsteps of Christ, the Apostles and Forerunners who have gone ahead of us, it is vital for us to seek peace with all men and be at peace with them.

Do you think it right to be a peacemaker? Does your presence in people’s lives represent peace? Or are you a preacher of violence and hatred through your actions?

Remember, you are called to be an Envoy of peace.
