Channelopathy

One of the first things you get to hear about as a “fresher” into medical school are the mighty (or dreadful, depending on your outlook) P’s.

The dreadful P’s refer to a group of courses that share at least two things in common; they’ll give you a tough time while studying them, and they’re spelt starting with a “P”.

I encountered the first of them early on in my pre-clinical years: Physiology.

Strangely enough, I didn’t find it to be as difficult as it had been earlier painted to me (can’t say the same for the other P’s I eventually became acquainted with, lol). Before that time, I already had a healthy appreciation of the work of art that was the human body. But physiology made me see how the human body was more than just a work of art; it was a delicately balanced technical marvel.

Physiology introduced me to the seemingly tiny things that are actually indispensable to living a normal life. One of such little things are channels.

Scattered across the surfaces of the cells that make up the human body are pores or channels that enable the transmission of chemical and electrical messages that allow the body to function normally. In the event that these channels stop working (i.e. a channelopathy), it means that a disease condition is imminent.

“…I will bless you… and you will be a blessing to others.”

(Genesis 12:2b, NLT [Paraphrased])

“You are the salt of the Earth… you are the light of the world… let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

(Matthew 5:13-16, NLT [Paraphrased])

“Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God…”

(2 Corinthians 2:15a, NLT)

The believer in Christ is a blessed “man”. However, when God crafted out the plan of redemption, the end goal wasn’t just to get a few people blessed, His aim was to ensure the whole world had access to His blessings.

God aims to make each and every one of His children a channel of His blessing to the rest of humanity. God hopes for the rest of the world to experience what it means to carry the love and life of God within. But the question is “Will you allow it?”

Salt preserves and light illuminates and staves off the darkness; if the world seems to be sliding deeper and deeper into decadence, it’s an indicator that the love and light of God in your spirit needs to shine brighter.

More than ever, now is the time to let the blessing of God flow through you, to whomever comes in contact with you. Be a channel of God’s blessing (and not a channelopath 🙃).
