How God places men.

There are several uncertainties that young people face.

One such is about their place in life and contribution in the grand scheme of things. This probably accounts for why we are quick to join ‘causes’ and change movements. There is a desire to be well-positioned to do the most good for the most people – or at least a select group of people, as it were.

So what is this like for the Christian?

Sure, God intends for us to grow and live out the purpose for His glory and the joy of all peoples. Not just causes, movements, and trends. He desires that our matters anchored in eternity, be for His praise in time.

But how does He go about it? Jesus gave us a bird’s eye view of this process. We will consider it briefly;

[14] Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

[15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

[16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV)

What does God do first? He lights men. The word for light used here, in the context of verse 15, means “to set on fire” or ”to kindle”. It implies being consumed and engaged with. Thus, the first thing in context that God wants to do is to set us on fire for Him and His kingdom. And indeed that’s what He does.

It’s our design and designation to exist and function as the light of the world! I can’t think of a grander designation than that. It highlights the desperate state of the world as being under darkness. It also highlights the urgent need for the disciples of Christ as Light in an increasingly dark world.

The next thing He does is that He places men. There is a principle behind this placement. It is this: Purpose determines placement. It determines position. The reason why men do not put candlelight under a bushel is not because of the environmental hazard, but because it will defeat the purpose of lighting the candle. The purpose is to provide Illumination.

Given that purpose, what do men do to a lighted candle?

They put it on a candle stick, so it can give light to everyone that is in the house. Purpose precedes placement. Purpose determines position.

Whenever there is a right correlation between purpose and position, the next result is the experience of the Glory of God in the consequent rejoicing of men. Our being rightly positioned and doing the will of God for our lives makes all the difference.

What does this mean for us?

It means that as we desire to be relevant and make a difference, we ought also to subscribe to God’s model of advancement. God desires that we make a difference and that our lives should count in eternity, but for that to happen we must trust Him to light us.

And then we can rest knowing that He will position us for His Glory as He deems fit – not under the bushel, but on a candlestick.
