[103] How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
[104] Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
[105] Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:103-105 (KJV)
Have you ever been in a desperate situation, searching for directions and wanting to know what step(s) to take or what decision(s) to make?
Trust me, I’ve been there several times. And as Christians, I believe that we all go through the same thing. We want God’s leading and direction in matters that concern our lives, especially the important aspects (like choosing a career, life partner, changing locations or jobs, etc).
In trying to find direction, we utilise different methods of hearing from God, and sometimes we receive responses in different ways that could either be us actually hearing from God or assuming we heard from Him.
A lot of us might have followed paths we thought God was leading us through, only to discover it led to a lot of heartbreaks, disappointments and failures.
How then do we know when it is God speaking to us? How do we know it is not our own minds or selfish interests trying to lead us on a wild goose chase — or even the devil trying to mislead and manipulate us?

I have had several experiences on discovering and following God’s leading, and I have learned that there are methods through which we could think we have heard God speak but which may not be God speaking, and the sure way you cannot be confused on whether God is speaking to you on a direction to follow.
From the time God redirected me at the last minute and changed my choice of career, I have been keen on trying to know God’s leading in all matters, especially the ones I consider very important.
Over time, God has spoken to me in several ways. Through dreams or visions, through other people, through a strong impression, an audible voice, and so on. As such, I have had several experiences that have made a lasting impact on my life.
Once, I followed a ‘leading’ based on several dreams I had at that period without taking time to really check if it was God speaking through those dreams. This eventually led to me being emotionally hurt, injured, and devastated.
Thank God it eventually worked for my good, but I learnt the lesson of my life; not all dreams, visions, voices, and so on come from God. The devil is also out there as a master planner and deceiver who wants to manipulate children of God and turn them towards the wrong directions.
Therefore? The most reliable way God will speak to you is through HIS WORD! This cannot be overemphasized. Any other method of hearing from God that will not directly mirror, agree with or point to His word should not be taken as reliable. We know through scripture that God himself is THE WORD.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1 (KJV)
God is equivalent to His Word — and I believe you’ll agree with me that there’s nothing else in this world or beyond that is as reliable as God.
In another scripture it says that God magnifies His word more than his name.
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
Psalms 138:2 (KJV)
Isn’t this amazing? It shows that anytime the word of God is involved, God is obligated to honor it and show up. Hallelujah!
So, are you looking for direction on a particular matter?
Find the WORD! It is the surest route out of confusion and mistakes. Be passionate about it and you will be surprised that God’s word will locate you.
God bless you!

Hmm, the most reliable way God will speak to us is through His word 📌
