When Assumptions Fade

Have you ever misjudged someone, only to later realize they were nothing like you thought?

Maybe a coworker who seemed like a snob but turned out to be incredibly kind. Or a friend whose actions made more sense once you listened to them and understood their side of the story. The more you got to know them, the clearer their heart(s) became.

That’s how it is with God.

It’s easy to assume things about Him based on personal or passed-on experiences, unanswered prayers, or even what others have said. But to truly know Him, we have to learn His heart — not just His power, not just His laws, but who He is.

Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.”

Jeremiah‬ ‭31‬:‭3‬ ‭‭(NLT‬‬)

Think about the relationships in your life. The more time you spend with someone, the more you know them and the easier it is to trust them. You begin to understand what makes them happy, what makes them sad, how they want to receive love and how they show love.

It’s the same with God. The more we seek Him, the more we see His heart, and it’s not distant or harsh. It’s present, full of love, patience, and faithfulness.

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭16 ‭‭‬(NLT‬‬)

But here’s the BIG question: Are you taking the time to truly know Him, or are you making assumptions based on what you’ve heard?

Think about it; You worry about the future, yet He has already assured you of His good plans. You hesitate to surrender, scared that He will take away what you love, when He promises something better. Why do you keep allowing doubt creep in?

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah‬ ‭29‬:‭11 ‭‭‬(NLT‬‬)

Understanding God’s heart doesn’t happen in a single moment; it’s a journey. It happens in quiet moments of prayer, in reading His Word, in looking back and seeing His faithfulness in your life. It happens when you stop assuming and start asking, God, what are You really like?

“Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.”

Jeremiah‬ ‭33‬:‭3‬ (‭‭‭NLT‬‬)

Right now, pause and ask yourself: Have I truly sought to know God’s heart? Or have I been looking at Him through the lens of my fears, past experiences, or other people’s opinions?

He is always willing to reveal Himself, you just have to come closer.

Shalom!
