Stones and a Sling

Have you ever met a really tall and huge man?

Someone I know was recently speaking about how the society has made the standard of becoming a ‘Bodyguard’ or ‘Bouncer’ to be about the muscles and broad chest. He asked, “Shouldn’t the intentions matter the most?” and I laughed.

A giant nearly ten feet tall stepped out from the Philistine line into the open, Goliath from Gath. He had a bronze helmet on his head and was dressed in armor—126 pounds of it! He wore bronze shin guards and carried a bronze sword. His spear was like a fence rail—the spear tip alone weighed over fifteen pounds. His shield bearer walked ahead of him.

1 Samuel‬ ‭17‬:‭4‬-‭7‬ ‭(MSG‬‬)

Imagine a man as huge and tall as Goliath comes into your community one day – that alone is a threat to your safety – but He doesn’t stop at that, he then dares you and everyone in your vicinity to come out and take him on if they are strong enough. No one steps up to the challenge, so he lives like a king in your territory for a month and ten days. Imagine that?

Obviously, business can’t go as usual anymore and people can’t go about their daily lives because he terrorizes everyone, including the God your community has dedicated their life to worshipping.

David, who was talking to the men standing around him, asked, “What’s in it for the man who kills that Philistine and gets rid of this ugly blot on Israel’s honor? Who does he think he is, anyway, this uncircumcised Philistine, taunting the armies of God-Alive?

1 Samuel‬ ‭17‬:‭26‬ ‭(MSG‬‬)

Then comes a certain shepherd boy who perhaps isn’t known to the entire community, speaking boldly to a fierce Giant? Oh, how the mothers and fathers in the community would have scolded him. “Do you want to get yourself killed?” would have been the question of the day, but David persisted.

It was his audacity for me! How could an inexperienced teenager choose to confront a 10-feet tall giant? How?

Because it was more of a spiritual stance for David than the physical differences other people could see. It was a matter of what he carried within and how he commanded it without

Then David ran up to the Philistine and stood over him, pulled the giant’s sword from its sheath, and finished the job by cutting off his head. When the Philistines saw that their great champion was dead, they scattered, running for their lives.

1 Samuel‬ ‭17‬:‭51‬ ‭(MSG‬‬)

There are life situations and experiences that try to tear you down, riding on your areas of weakness and exploiting you with them. Of a truth, there are some battles you will have to fight without considering your physical stature or strength.

Why do you cave into the pressure? Why have you given up before going to battle? What if all it takes is just five smooth stones and a sling to give you victory?

Face your challenges head on today, and move with dauntless faith because greater is He who is in you than you that is in the world! Shalom.
