The Seed Of Righteous

The Hope of the Gospel in the future

A few days ago this year, world over, we commemorated Children’s Day.

Previously, we celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child and of the Male Child. And as I observed the emphases, it became a burden that we might have inadvertently turned a wrong corner.

How do we as Christians think about children? It makes a difference, whether we think Biblically or Culturally. The outcomes are not the same. Central to the Christian thought is that Children are the heritage of the Lord. (I touched on the conflict and the crossfire in which children found themselves sometime last year.)

[1] Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

[2] His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

Psalms 112:1-2 (KJV)

The Psalmist here speaks of the seed of the righteous. He said the seed of the righteous shall be mighty upon earth. As I thought about this verse, certain implications came to the fore.

First: He said the seed of the righteous. Seed by definition here means “child”, “posterity”, or “offspring”. The Identity of a man as “righteous” has implications not only for such a man but also for his seed. It’s a definition that immediately impacts his seed. There is such a thing as the seed of the righteous that distinguishes such a seed from others. It is a recurring theme in Scripture. God takes particular interest in the children of the righteous.

Second: Shall be mighty upon the earth.  The word mighty means “powerful”. Why is this important? Why is power allotted to the seed of the righteous? Why is the sphere of such might indicated?

There are several answers possible for all these questions. At the very least, we can say that, they will be mighty because they will need might. Power will be needed because the seed of the righteous will be confronted and tasked with the responsibility of engaging unrighteous structures and systems, bringing them unto conformity and obedience of faith. They will contend with the arsenals of darkness and advance the dominion of God through the Gospel in nook and cranny, to all and sundry. For these, they will need strength.

Third: shall be mighty upon earth. Earth is the space and zone of engagement, because the earth has been given to the sons of men. This is where they will need power. Earth is the battlefield. The eternal destiny of men though assigned in eternity, is essentially decided on the earth. For the souls of men and all, we must contend. We must contend on the Earth.

Why is this important to us? The possibilities of a child is modified by the parents. This is one of the reasons we reach the unreached with the gospel. Because their response to the gospel impacts not only their eternal destinies but also the possibilities of their children.

It also means that the spread of wickedness and ungodliness is a sabotage on children. We must save our young from unsolicited hazards. We must raise and equip children who can and will contend with the enemy at the gates.

Why? Because our children are the hope of tomorrow.
