Humility.

One of the virtues expected among children of God) is selflessness; using what God gave us – our gifts – to help and benefit others without grumbling or being disdainful of anyone irrespective of status or class.

Both old and new Testaments Scriptures have stressed how God lifts up the lowly, saves the humble and gives the meek His grace. The Apostle Paul encouraged believers thus;

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Philippians 2:3 (KJV)

There are people in the Scripture we can learn humility from;

Abraham was obedient to the extent of sacrificing his only begotten son, however  in God’s mercy, a ram was provided for use instead of his son and he was compensated by being made the Father of all nations.

Jesus Christ was obedient to God till death, and despite being exposed to much suffering, He never complained but endured till the cross to receive eternal glory.

Apostle Paul, during the time of his ministry, worked not to be burden for the people under his care, was careful not to demand for his right and despite severe persecution, he also endured to the end of his earthly race.

There are visible traits of humility which should be seen in God’s children; meekness, patience, quietness, perseverance, Love (agape, the God kind), respect, forgiveness, doing service, gentleness, etc.

God can decide to take or remove anything that makes anyone (especially His children) proud, so the individual can become humble. King Nebuchadnezzar is a biblical example of one who was arrogant and proud of himself and kingdom, but God taught him the principle of humility.

Be it job/career fulfilment, academic attainment, your family background, marriage, children, and material possessions etc that seek to grow pride, remember that God is the owner of everything.

Dear believer, put that emotion called pride in check by being conscious that you have it, crucifying it daily and daily cultivating the habit of humility.

Humility does not take anything from us but rather adds to us respect, integrity and God’s glory amidst everyone. Embrace humility and let it be known as your attribute.

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.
