Help for Daily Living

One of the most overlooked realities of life is that it is daily.

This is a fact that is so obvious and yet so profound at the same time. Life can be relentless, and it is parcelled out in daily batches.

Oftentimes, a new day feels like hope, an opportunity to start again. At other times, a new day feels old because it hasn’t come with the relief, the difference, the change that we desire. Some days feel slow, while there are days that feel like several days compressed in one.

Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, summed it up simple yet vivid manner. He said:

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

In His words, today and tomorrow are so distinct and demanding that you are better off keeping today in your focus, rather than getting overwhelmed by the weight of tomorrow (whilst you are still sorting through today).

The daily-ness of life is quite central to our experience of life, and so the believer has also been informed and encouraged to take advantage of the resources God has made available to deal with this experience.

The Psalmist talks about God daily loading us with benefits (Psalms 68:19). He also talks about the Mercies of God being new every morning (Lam 3:22-23). These are resources in God, designed to help us deal with the daily-ness of life.

For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.

1 Chronicles 12:22 (KJV)

The context of the verse above deals with the initial years of King David’s reign in Israel. It was describing the way and manner in which chief men were added to his camp.

Notice that the writer says: …day by day, there came to David to help him…

Everyday help came to David. This is help for daily living.

Can we believe Jesus that just as every day has sufficience in its character to put us under pressure, to be difficult, to be constraining, that in that way and manner, we can experience help on a daily basis? That, day by day, help will come to us, to deal with whatever the day throws at us?

This is an outworking of the description of God as an ever present help in time of need. Because truth be told; our need for God is an ever present need. We need God on a daily basis – all day – not to simply survive but to thrive as God would have us.

Be encouraged today, for there is provision in God to funnel help your way, day by day. There is help in God for daily life.
