God is inevitable. If this is all I say, I would have said a lot.
Recently, I was contemplating the course of life on the earth; the motivation we have for living and for doing the things that we do.
Whilst there is a place for purposeful living, scriptures set forth a powerful climax to our stay on the earth. It shuts down the proposition of death as the end.
Scriptures lift the curtains and show us something more powerful, more imminent and inevitable. This is true, regardless of what you believe. It shows us that there is accountability even after death.
Not everything ends with death. And to make matters serious, we could spend our entire lifetime ignoring and avoiding God, however the moment we cross the Rubicon of death, we are headed for a collision course with God.
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.
Acts 17:30-31 (ESV)
There are a few points I want to make clear to us.
Point 1: (...He has fixed a day…)
Notice it says “He has fixed a day”. He didn’t consult with us. Neither are we contacted to confirm availability because we will all be available. We are meeting with Him. That day is certain, it is a sure day. He is the protagonist.
As for humans, we are offered days. A lifetime worth of days. However, all of that ends one day. It finally ends on the day that He has appointed.
Point 2: (…He will judge the world in righteousness…)
There have been several thoughts about the fate of the world and the fate of humanity. Regardless of what anyone thinks, the end of the world and of the peoples of the world is not a matter of speculation or opinions.
He will judge the world. Whether we agree to it or not. Whether we believe it or not.
We are headed for judgment and it will be a just judgment. He will judge the world, because He is right and it is His right to do so.
Point 3: (…by a Man whom He has appointed…)
There is a Judge, and we don’t get to decide the outcome of His judgment. This immediately implies that there is a law — a basis for this judgement — and we have our lifetime to be acquainted and rightly related to The Judge.
For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver; the Lord is our king; he will save us.
Isaiah 33:22 (ESV)
Notice that the Judge is also the law giver. It is He who is also saddled with the responsibility of Saving us. He is our Savior.
Point 4: (…and of this He has given assurance to all by raising Him from the dead.)
The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate difference. It is the turning point of all history, the singular most decisive event in history. It is also proof of the veracity of the Judgement.
If Jesus Christ never resurrected, then perhaps we could also have retained uncertainties, or outrightly dismissed claims of judgment as religious blabber or idle talk.
Except that He did rise from the dead.
that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:4 (ESV)
So, God is inevitable, He is unavoidable. We are all on an eternal collision course with Him and we have a certain date with Him. He has given us assurances of this, in that He raised Christ from the dead.
What will we do in light of this staggering truth?
